A day out by train is a proper pleasure — no parking stress, no designated driver, and some of Britain's best scenery slides past the window on the way. Here are 14 car-free days out, and how to do them without the fares stinging.
Scenic journeys that are the day out
- The West Highland Line (Glasgow to Mallaig) — lochs, moors and the Glenfinnan Viaduct; one of the great railway journeys on earth.
- The Settle–Carlisle Line — across the Yorkshire Dales over the Ribblehead Viaduct.
- The Cambrian Coast Line (Wales) — hugging the coast past Barmouth and Harlech.
Cities made for car-free days
- Edinburgh, York, Bath and Cambridge — all compact, walkable and a short step from the station, so a day trip needs no car at all.
Coast & country by rail
- Whitby, St Ives, Scarborough and Windermere all have stations — pair the train with a walk or a beach and you've a full day.
Doing it cheaply
A Railcard (Two Together, Family & Friends, 16–25 or Senior) saves roughly a third and pays for itself in a couple of trips. Book advance tickets for the cheapest fares, travel off-peak, and look into split-ticketing (buying two tickets for one journey) for longer routes — it's legal and often much cheaper.
