Alcohol-Free Days Out in the UK — 15 Brilliant Sober-Friendly Ideas
Days out that have nothing to do with the pub — 15 genuinely good alcohol-free days out across the UK, from wild swimming to dry socials, for anyone doing life without the drink.
So much of British "going out" is built around a bar. But a brilliant day out doesn't need a drink anywhere near it — and if you're sober, sober-curious, driving, pregnant, or just fancy a day that isn't centred on alcohol, these are ideas that stand entirely on their own. No token soft drink required.
Get outdoors and moving
Wild swimming spots
Cold-water swimming is the antidote to a boozy Sunday — the endorphins are the point. Try the Hampstead Ponds in London, Gaddings Dam above Todmorden, or the tidal Clevedon Marine Lake in Somerset (free). Go with others and know your limits.
National Trust & National Park walks
A proper walk with a view and a flask is the original alcohol-free day out. The Malham loop in Yorkshire, Dovedale in the Peak District and the Devil's Dyke on the South Downs are all free, spectacular and pub-optional.
Culture and hands-on days
Free national museums
The Natural History Museum, National Museum of Scotland, National Railway Museum (York) and Manchester's Science and Industry Museum are all free, absorbing, and entirely drink-free days out — hours of it.
Pottery, painting and craft workshops
A guided craft session gives a day out a focus that has nothing to do with a bar. Look for pottery throwing, life drawing or a screen-printing class in your nearest city — the concentration is genuinely restorative.
Food-led, not drink-led
Food markets
Borough Market (London), Altrincham Market (Greater Manchester) and St Nicholas Market (Bristol) are brilliant grazing days out where the star is the food, not the bar. Alcohol-free "spirits" and craft sodas are increasingly easy to find, too.
Afternoon tea
A proper afternoon tea is a genuinely lovely occasion that never needed prosecco — most places do an alcohol-free version by default, and it feels like a treat.
Adrenaline and activity
- Go Ape / high ropes — nationwide, and there's no better sober rush.
- Indoor climbing walls — social, focused and in every major city.
- Trampoline parks & indoor karting — great for a sober group day or a birthday.
- Cycle a traffic-free trail — the Camel Trail (Cornwall), the Tissington Trail (Peak District) or any of the old-railway greenways.
Sober socials
Alcohol-free bars and events are a growing scene — Club Soda runs sober socials and keeps a directory of alcohol-free venues and tastings across the UK. Worth a look if you want the social side of a night out without the drink.
Practical notes
The best alcohol-free days out are the ones with a built-in purpose — a summit, a swim, a skill, a market — so the drink never enters the frame. If you're newly sober, picking activities that were never pub-adjacent in the first place makes the day easier and genuinely fun. And the alcohol-free drinks scene has transformed: most cafés, markets and restaurants now do a proper 0% option, so you're rarely stuck with a lemonade.
