Cornwall has a reputation as an expensive summer trip — but strip away the pasty-shop mark-ups and paid car parks and the county's greatest hits are almost all free. Here are 14 brilliant Cornish days out that cost next to nothing.
Free beaches worth the drive
- Kynance Cove (the Lizard) — turquoise water and serpentine rock stacks; National Trust car park charges, but the beach itself is free and unforgettable.
- Porthcurno — white sand under the open-air Minack Theatre (the beach is free; the theatre ticketed).
- Sennen Cove — the last beach before Land's End, and a brilliant surf-watching spot.
Coast-path walking (all free)
The South West Coast Path is the county's best free asset. The stretch from St Ives to Zennor, or the clifftops around Bedruthan Steps, give you Cornwall's postcard views for nothing but the effort. Dogs welcome on most sections.
Harbour towns to wander
St Ives, Fowey, Mevagissey and Padstow are all free to explore — cobbled lanes, working harbours, galleries you can browse. Bring a picnic and you've a full day for pennies.
Practical notes
The genuine expense in Cornwall is parking, which can hit £8–£12 a day in summer. Arrive before 10am for the cheapest spaces, use the St Ives park-and-ride to skip the town-centre scrum, and check whether your beach has a free National Trust members' car park. Pack a flask — clifftop coffees carry a serious view tax.
