Yorkshire Day Market

Parliament Street does something a little daft and rather lovely around Yorkshire Day: a proper county market of handcrafted goods, local food and drink, plus a pop-up sandpit, fairground rides and face painting that turn the street briefly seaside. It's the kind of local celebration that could easily tip into naff and instead lands as genuinely good fun, largely because the traders are the real thing — small Yorkshire producers rather than a travelling fair troupe.
Go for the stalls, stay for the fact that half of York seems to have turned out for it. Free, family-friendly, and over by the bank holiday weekend, so this is very much a now-or-never one.
