Silk Wood's maples turn reliably spectacular through October, and this year Forestry England has built a proper trail around them — hands-on discovery stops exploring the science and folklore behind the colour, plus a run of free drop-in activities: printing and poetry on 17 October, storytelling walks on the 26th and 30th, and a leaf-lantern trail from the 27th to 29th.
It's an easy one to actually get to: hard, level paths throughout, mobility scooters and wheelchairs to borrow, a Changing Places facility, and Silk Wood itself is dog-friendly on leads. Come on a crisp morning before the light goes flat.
