Living-history camps sprawl across the parade ground of one of Europe's best-preserved artillery fortifications — Picts, Romans, Jacobites and WWI cavalry all sharing the same walls for a weekend. It's the sort of thing that makes history genuinely click for kids, with hands-on demonstrations and battle displays rather than glass cases.
The coastal setting on the Moray Firth makes it a good half-day out either way, dolphins permitting.
