Outdoors · Pulborough

A proper October ramble with purpose: a guide leads small groups through the reserve's wooded heath, teaching you to tell a yellow stag's-horn from a yellow brain and a parasol from a puffball, no foraging agenda attached. Two and a half hours outdoors with people who actually know what they're looking at.
Good for going alone — everyone's there to learn, and fungi small-talk is surprisingly easy to strike up. Wear boots; the heathland paths are sandy and steep in places.
