Birmingham Jazz Presents: Alina Bzhezhinska's HipHarp

Birmingham Jazz's Friday nights at 1000 Trades are the sort of low-lit, close-quarters gig that makes a proper date night — good acoustics, a bar downstairs, and a room small enough that you're never more than a few feet from the band. This one is a genuine coup: internationally renowned harpist Alina Bzhezhinska, on a mission to bring the harp back into contemporary jazz, playing her own tribute to the great Dorothy Ashby.

Get there early for a drink in the Jewellery Quarter beforehand — it's a lovely part of the city to wander before curtain up.
