Things to Do in Stratford-upon-Avon — Shakespeare's Town in a Day

Stratford-upon-Avon does the impossible: a genuinely lovely day out built around a 400-year-dead playwright. Tudor streets, a swan-filled river and the RSC make it far more than a literary pilgrimage. Here's how to spend a day.
The Shakespeare sights
- Shakespeare's Birthplace — the Henley Street house where he was born, done well and central.
- Anne Hathaway's Cottage — a picture-book thatched farmhouse with lovely gardens, a mile out of town (a nice walk).
- A combined ticket is worth it if you plan to visit two or more of the family's houses.
Free by the river
The Bancroft Gardens and the towpath along the Avon are free, full of swans, and the best place for a picnic. Watch the narrowboats work the canal basin lock, or hire a rowing boat for a cheap thrill.
Theatre and views
The Royal Shakespeare Theatre is worth a look even without a show — the rooftop tower gives you a town-and-river view, and the RSC often releases affordable day tickets for those willing to be flexible.
Practical notes
Park at one of the edge-of-town car parks and walk in — the centre is small and flat. A morning of Shakespeare houses plus a riverside picnic and a boat makes a full, gentle day suitable for all ages.
