Cambridge packs a lot into a walkable centre: 800 years of architecture, world-class free museums, and a river made for lazy afternoons. Here's how to spend a genuinely good day out there.
Free things worth doing
- The Fitzwilliam Museum — free, vast, and genuinely world-class; Egyptian galleries and Impressionists under one roof.
- The Backs — the riverside lawns behind the colleges, best walked in the early evening light.
- Grantchester Meadows — a flat, buggy-friendly stroll or cycle along the river to the famous tea garden.
The Cambridge classic: punting
Gliding down the Cam past King's and Trinity is the thing to do. Chauffeured punts are pricier; self-hire is cheaper and more fun if you don't mind the odd zig-zag. Go late afternoon when the day-trippers thin out.
If you pay for one thing
King's College Chapel — the fan-vaulted ceiling is worth the ticket, especially if you can catch evensong (often free to attend).
Practical notes
Cambridge is cyclist-first and car-hostile — use the park-and-ride rather than hunting for city-centre parking. The centre is small and flat, so a day here is mostly walking. Term-time college opening varies, so check before you go if a specific college is on your list.
