Snowdon Mountain Railway

The only way to the 1,085m summit of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) without walking — a rack-and-pinion steam and diesel railway that climbs to the highest café in Wales. On a clear day the summit view reaches Ireland. Book well ahead; it sells out weeks in advance in summer, and services stop short of the summit in bad weather.

Walk it: the Llanberis Path

The longest but gentlest route up Snowdon, running alongside the railway — a serious but achievable day walk for fit families with older kids (allow 5–6 hours return, pack layers, check the mountain forecast).

Zip World Penrhyn Quarry, Bethesda

Velocity 2 is the fastest zip line in the world — you hit 100mph flying over a flooded slate quarry, face-first. There are gentler zips and a quarry-bottom playground for younger or less brave members of the group.

Bounce Below & Go Below, Blaenau Ffestiniog

Giant trampolines strung inside a cavern (Bounce Below), or an underground adventure abseiling and zip-lining through a Victorian slate mine (Go Below). Extraordinary, and entirely weatherproof.

For families and gentler days

Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways

Narrow-gauge steam trains through the heart of the mountains — the Welsh Highland line runs right past the foot of Snowdon. A brilliant low-effort way to see the scenery with young kids.

Zip World Fforest & the Fforest Coaster

An alpine-style toboggan run through the trees near Betws-y-Coed — kids control their own speed, so it suits a wide age range. The village itself is a good base with cafés and shops.

Swallow Falls, Betws-y-Coed

A short, easy walk to one of Wales's prettiest waterfalls — a low-commitment classic when you want scenery without a mountain.

Practical notes

Mountain weather is serious here — it can be sunny in the valley and dangerous on the tops. Always check the Met Office mountain forecast, pack full waterproofs and warm layers, and never rely on phone signal. Parking at Pen-y-Pass (for the popular Snowdon routes) fills before dawn in summer; use the Sherpa'r Wyddfa bus instead. Book the railway and Zip World online well in advance — both sell out.
